The Current (limited selections)

Legislators in the past have stymied attempts to remove the dam and restore the Ocklawaha River. The Florida Wildlife Federation and Florida Defenders of the Environment say removing the dam is needed to allow species such as manatees, striped bass and shortnose sturgeon to migrate into the river.

The statewide Professional Educators Network provides legal counsel, liability insurance and professional training to teachers, but doesn't engage in collective bargaining, doesn't contribute or endorse political candidates and doesn't consider itself a union. The state Public Employee Relations Commission, however, does, but two bills advancing in the Legislature would exempt it from state laws governing public employee unions.

One bill would deny food stamps to someone convicted of drug charges, and the other prohibits Electronic Benefit Transfer cards from being used to buy alcohol or tobacco, or to be used at strip clubs or out-of-state ATM machines. Rep. Mack Bernard commented that given the concern for taxpayers' dollars for welfare recipients, he hoped the Legislature would look at the amount spent for corporate welfare.

A Senate committee did not take up SB 1158 during its last committee meeting of the 2012 session because of concerns raised by the governor's office. Sen. Greg Evers, the bill's sponsor, said he is unlikely to introduce the bill next year after The Florida Current reported on Monday that he owned land surrounded by Blackwater River State Forest, where a company wants an agreement to explore and drill for oil and gas.

HB 1403 would make it easier for private high school students to compete for a public school in a sport not offered by their own school. However, concerns remain that the bill will create loopholes for illegal recruiting.

The agreement would increase base rates by $150 million and refunds $288 million in replacement fuel and power costs for the Crystal river nuclear plant over five years. The Florida Retail Federation, the Office of Public Counsel and the Florida Industrial Power Users Group support the agreement but the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy urged the PSC to reject the deal.

A bill aimed at protecting lawmakers from subpoenas hit a wall on Monday, as key lawmakers from both chambers said it had become entangled in the politics of redistricting.
